Today is a big day for Mia. She has a meeting with the boss. The boss is a tall woman called Ms Hall. Mia does not know her well. She is a little afraid of her.
In the morning, Mia is very nervous. She reads her notes again and again. Ben looks at her. "Are you OK?" he asks. "No," says Mia. "My English is not good when I am nervous."
"It is OK," says Ben. "Ms Hall is nice." "Just smile and talk slowly." Mia smiles. It is not a very good smile.
At ten o'clock, Mia goes into the meeting room. Ms Hall is there with two men. They all stand up. "Hello, Mia," says Ms Hall. "Please sit down."
Mia sits down. Her hands are cold. Her head is full of English words. Ms Hall looks at her and smiles. "Tea or coffee?" she asks.
Mia does not hear the question well. She hears the word "or". She thinks it is a yes or no question. "Yes, please," she says.
Ms Hall stops. The two men look at each other. Then Ms Hall laughs. It is a big, kind laugh. "Yes, please?" she says. "Both? OK!"
She goes to the kitchen. She comes back with two cups. One cup is tea. One cup is coffee. She puts them both in front of Mia. Now everyone laughs, and Mia laughs, too.
After that, the meeting is easy. Mia is not nervous now. She talks slowly, and she smiles a real smile. Ms Hall likes her ideas. "Very good, Mia," she says at the end.
Mia drinks the coffee. Then she drinks the tea. The tea is very good. It has milk in it, the English way. "I like this," she thinks.
Now Mia has coffee in the morning. In the afternoon, she has tea with milk. And every time Ms Hall sees her, she asks the same question. "Tea or coffee, Mia?" "Yes, please," says Mia, and they both laugh.
