Ben is Mia's friend. He works in her office. He sits at the next desk. He is from London, and he knows everything about it.
Ben is very kind. On Mia's first day, he shows her the office. He shows her the kitchen and the good coffee. He tells her about the best trains. He tells her where to eat.
Every Friday, Mia and Ben have lunch together. They go to a small place near the office. Ben has soup and bread. Mia has a sandwich. They talk about work, and they talk about life.
Ben asks about Japan. Mia tells him about Osaka and the food there. Mia asks about English words. Ben tells her new words every week. "Lovely" is his best word. Everything is "lovely" for Ben.
「lovely(すてき)」がベンのいちばんの言葉です。
But one Friday, Ben is quiet. He does not eat his soup. He looks out of the window. "Are you OK?" asks Mia. "I have some news," says Ben.
Mia stops eating. Is it bad news? Does Ben have a new job? She does not want a new friend at the next desk. She wants Ben.
"I have a new home," says Ben. "My old flat is very small." "The new one is bigger, and it is cheap." "Oh," says Mia. "That is good news." "Where is it?"
Ben smiles a very big smile. "It is on your street," he says. "Next to the small shop." "Next to Omar's shop?" asks Mia. "Yes!" says Ben.
Mia laughs. "So you are not sad?" she asks. "No!" says Ben. "I am very happy." "The quiet face is a joke."
On Saturday, Ben has a lot of boxes. Mia helps him. Mrs Green comes with tea. Her cat sits in a box and does not get out. Ben laughs. "Lovely," he says.
Now Mia and Ben go to work together. They take the same train. And every Friday, they still have lunch. Some things change, and some things do not.
