Some days are good, and some days are bad. Today starts as a bad day.
いい日もあれば、悪い日もあります。今日は悪い日として始まります。
Mia's clock does not ring. She gets up at eight, not seven. There is no time for a shower. There is no time for coffee. She puts on her coat and runs.
ミアの目覚まし時計が鳴りません。七時ではなく、八時に起きます。シャワーを浴びる時間がありません。コーヒーを飲む時間もありません。コートを着て走ります。
At the station, the train is full. There are no seats. Sam is not on the train today. A big man stands on her foot. "Sorry," he says, but he does not move.
駅では、電車が満員です。席がありません。今日はサムが電車にいません。大きな男の人がミアの足をふみます。「すみません」と言いますが、どきません。
At work, her computer does not start. She waits for a long time. Then she calls the computer people. "After lunch," they say. Mia sits at her desk with no computer. She is tired, and she is hungry.
会社では、パソコンが起動しません。長いあいだ待ちます。それからパソコンの担当者に電話します。「お昼のあとで」と言われます。ミアはパソコンなしで机に座っています。疲れていて、おなかもすいています。
At lunch, it rains. Mia has her umbrella, but it is very windy. The wind takes her umbrella. It goes down the street and into the road. A bus goes over it. Now she has no umbrella.
お昼に、雨が降ります。ミアはかさを持っていますが、風がとても強いです。風がかさを持っていってしまいます。かさは通りを転がって、道路に出ます。バスがその上を通ります。もう、かさはありません。
In the afternoon, things are a little better. Her computer works. Ben makes her a cup of tea with milk. "Bad day?" he asks. "Very bad day," says Mia. Ben gives her a biscuit, too.
午後は、少しましになります。パソコンが動きます。ベンがミルクティーをいれてくれます。「ひどい日？」と聞きます。「すごくひどい日」とミアは言います。ベンはビスケットもくれます。
At six o'clock, Mia goes home. At the station, Joe is there with his guitar. He sees her and smiles. He plays a happy song. Mia stops and listens, and she smiles, too.
六時、ミアは家に帰ります。駅では、ジョーがギターを持っています。ジョーはミアを見てにっこりします。明るい歌をひきます。ミアは立ち止まって聞き、ミアもにっこりします。
On her street, Omar is at the door of his shop. "Hello, Mia!" he says. "Your favourite chocolate is here today." Mia buys some. Omar gives her an apple, too. "For a bad day," he says.
家の通りでは、オマールさんがお店の入り口にいます。「やあ、ミア！」と言います。「きみの好きなチョコレート、今日入ったよ」ミアは少し買います。オマールさんはりんごもくれます。「ひどい日のために」と言います。
At home, there is a note on her door. It is from Mrs Green. "Dinner at my house at seven," it says. "Bring Ben."
家に着くと、ドアにメモがはってあります。グリーンさんからです。「七時にうちで夕食を」と書いてあります。「ベンも連れてきてね」
At seven, Mia and Ben go next door. Mrs Green has a big pot of soup. There is warm bread and a cake. The cat sits on Mia's feet all evening. They eat and talk and laugh.
七時、ミアとベンはとなりに行きます。グリーンさんは大きななべにスープを作っています。あたたかいパンとケーキもあります。ねこは一晩中ミアの足の上に座っています。みんなで食べて、話して、笑います。
At ten o'clock, Mia is in bed. She thinks about her day. The morning is bad. The evening is very good. "It is a good day," she thinks. "Not all of it. But the end." Then she sleeps.
十時、ミアはベッドに入ります。今日のことを考えます。朝はひどかった。夜はとてもよかった。「いい日だった」とミアは思います。「全部じゃないけど。でも、終わりがね」それから眠ります。
